I take a sip of my whiskey on the rocks and stare at the crackling fire in front of me. My chair feels like a damn cage, holding me back from where I’m really supposed to be. This room where my brothers scheme and laugh as they play a game of pool on the green table in the back. Their noise distracts me from my goal.
Getting Naomi to submit as quickly as possible and making her pick me.
My grip on the glass tightens as I bring it to my lips and take another sip. This drink is the only thing that relaxes me when I’m stressed as fuck. I can’t help it; when I have to share with my brothers, things always get tense. We always want the same thing. Someone has to lose … and this time, it isn’t going to be me.
“So you’ve got a favorite yet?” Anthony asks Devon as he shoots a ball into the hole.
It takes Devon a while to answer. “No … not particularly.”
“I do …” Anthony muses, playing coy.
“Who?” Devon asks.
“That girl … with the olive skin and dark, thin eyes …” I can see him smile, and it makes me want to smash his face in with my glass.
“Hyun?” Devon makes a face. “I never pegged her to be your type.”
“Nah, the other one …”
I turn my head around the corner and growl, “Stay away from her.”
My brothers both look my way, but only Devon opens his mouth. “What’s your problem?”
“Stay. Away. From. Her.” I just give them the look. That look. The one we’ve learned to respect from one another. The one that says … I’m going to kill you if you touch what’s mine.

La mia presa sul vetro stringe come lo porto alle labbra e prendere un altro sorso. Questa bevanda è l'unica cosa che mi rilassa quando sono stressato. Non posso farne a meno; quando devo condividere con i miei fratelli, le cose si fanno sempre tese. Vogliamo sempre la stessa cosa. Qualcuno deve perdere ... e questa volta, non sarò io.
"Quindi hai già un animaletto preferito?" Anthony chiede a Devon mentre spara una palla in buca.
Ci vuole un pò a Devon per rispondere. "No ... non particolarmente."
"Sì ..." rimugina Anthony, suonando timido.
"Chi?" Chiede Devon.
"Quella ragazza ... con la pelle olivastra e gli occhi scuri e sottili ..." Posso vederlo sorridere, e fa venire voglia di spaccargli la faccia con il mio bicchiere.
"Hyun?" Devon fa una smorfia. "Non avrei mai detto fosse il tuo tipo."
"No, l'altra..."
Giro la testa dietro l'angolo e brontolo, "stai lontano da lei."
Entrambi i miei fratelli entrambi guardano nella mia direzione, ma solo Devon apre la bocca. "Qual'è il tuo problema?"
"Sta. Lontano. Da. Lei." Gli do solo quello sguardo. Quello sguardo. Quello che abbiamo imparato a rispettare l'uno dall'altro. Quello che dice... ti ucciderò se toccherai ciò che è mio.
